Winterdance by Gary Paulsen, the best-selling, award-winning author of young reader books, is a fascinating biography of his first Iditarod. A book for older teens and adults (nothing nasty in it, but it's nothing to recommend to his younger readers -- let them discover it on their own some day).

This book, a true story about an inexperienced newcomer running the Iditerod for the first time, will make you laugh, make you think, raise goosebumps on your arms, and give you a whole new perspective on dogs. It's like he's trying to hard to pound into our heads about how meaningful his experience was, instead of just telling us the story and letting us figure it out on our own. The predicaments this guy finds himself in before the race even starts made me laugh out loud several times. Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2018. A wonderful book. I laughed until my officemate asked me if everything was okay. His dry wit as he described mishap after mishap caused me to shake with laughter as I tried to contain myself on the New York City subway; I had to put the book down several times so that I could "regroup" before the next bout of laughter. Just that. But bless him, he's an idiot with a great memory and a flair for the self-deprecating humor, the kind that leaves you almost as incapacitated as Paulsen being dragged behind a team of Devil clones. In fact having started it, it was hard to put it down. It is a good read about a major human and canine accomplishment that is not steeped in ego. Gary Paulsen's passion in life is running sled dogs. Paulsen is an exciting, humorous storyteller who will glue the reader to the page until the end of the punishing race. Sometimes Paulsen's a little too hyperbolic for my taste but an overall recommend to everyone type read.

Excellent beginners view of the great Iditerod race. There was an error retrieving your Wish Lists. Ah! There's a problem loading this menu right now. The book was okay. "But the beauty of the woods, the incredible joy of it is too alluring to be ignored, and I could not stand to be away from it--indeed, still can't--and so I ran dogs simply to run dogs; to be in and part of the forest, the woods. Don't read this book in public -- because you'll be laughing too hard to be in company. Little did I know, it would." Winterdance Dogsled Tours, Haliburton: Address, Phone Number, Winterdance Dogsled Tours Reviews: 5/5 There is exactly one word in this book that bugs me, [if you're the type of person who thinks that the word rape shouldn't be used unless you're referring to sexual assault, as I am, then you too might take issue with Paulsen when he says his Iditarod funds are "raped" as he makes his way to Alaska. The book is educational, spell-binding, and even shocking. When you read what these racers have to overcome to run this race, you understand that they're a breed apart. It seemed a good idea at the time--after all, the race is only 1180 miles long--in the winter--in Alaska. Sorry for commenting a year after the fact, but this is for other parents who might have your same question: Would read to my own kids, would probably not read to a class. Hilarious. It's not often these days that I read a book that I can't put down, but this definitely is one. It was their race as much as it was mine, more so. My dad liked it so much, he read it to his grandchildren (removing the occasional cuss word). I laughed until I couldn't read bcause of the tears in my eyes, I laughed until the shouts from the other room of "we can't hear the television or ourselves think" registered on my brain. I still wonder how he survived it. He came close to death several times during the race, but chose to go back and race the Iditarod again two years later. Not only did I learn so much about the things involved in running and preparing for the Iditarod, but I also found myself laughing outloud at the most inappropriate times! I probably read this to them for the first time 10 years ago but the "The Skunk Chapter" is still a frequent request on days when we are looking for something to lighten the mood. After, in his view, adequate training, Paulsen and his 15 dog team began the Iditarod which turned out to be seventeen days of Hell. Plus every two pages there was some variation of, "I was arrogant and thought it couldn't possibly get any harder.
This is one of the better books I've ever read! A great read.

I had come just one hundred miles.”, [I looked at Cookie instead....she stood and looked down the trail. I have recommended his writing to two other and they have enjoyed it completely and recommended to still others. I'm glad he at least kept his wits about him enough to remember wha. Some things we will never get a chance to do. He began spending hours alone in the basement of his apartment building, reading one book after another. There is nothing like reading a history or biography book and being so completely transported to another time and place that you find... Paulsen and his team of dogs endured snowstorms, frostbite, dogfights, moose attacks, sleeplessness, and hallucinations in the relentless push to go on. If you think you're not interested in dog sledding, now is the time to change your mind.
